No, you're not provoking those "invitations." You warned me away from My Space. Since then, I've confirmed that your judgment was correct. The advantage of My Space is that you can access it without having to be a member. So if you want exposure for your book or garage band, you'll get more of it there. The disadvantage, you've touched upon in your post. Besides security, I also prefer the look of Facebook to that of My Space. It's cleaner and more legible.
