Since the word "hit" is used as a verb, it's unclear from the story whether there was one hit (which struck the arm and face) or multiple hits. If only one hit, it would have to be a hoagie or submarine. Also, do you suppose the sandwich was thrown, or was it used as a baton?
Very astute comments on the sandwich, Scott. Yes ... I'm thinking the bread had to be something chewy and tough, like a good baguette, in order to survive, intact. And I had assumed the suspect used it as a baton because otherwise the reporter would have used the word "thrown."
